The Solid Mechanics Research Group, in coordination with the Meza Research Group at the University of Washington and the Mechanics of Materials Laboratory at Auburn University, organized a mini-symposium at the 2022 Society of Engineering Science Annual Technical Meeting. This minisymposium brought together researchers from around the world to share recent developments and insights into the unique role that interfaces play in the process of damage.
Minisymposium Abstract: Interfaces play a significant role in damage mechanisms in materials at many scales. In some cases, interfaces serve as damage initiators; in others, they can serve as inhibitors. In this minisymposium, we bring together a broad range of topics related to damage, with the general theme of exploring how interactions with interfaces affect damage behavior. Topics of interest include grain boundaries, material interfaces, composites, and their role in plasticity, fracture, and damage initiation. While this minisymposium encompasses numerical, theoretical, and experimental work, all talks will be focused on the physics of damage, rather than damage characterization.
