The Cisco AnyConnect software is not supported on Ubuntu 24.04. Use the following instructions to connect to the Iowa State VPN on Ubuntu 24.04. Note that these instructions will not work on earlier versions of Ubuntu.

1. Install necessary packages

Use the following command to install openconnect using aptitude.

sudo apt install network-manager-openconnect network-manager-openconnect-gnome

2. Create VPN

Open the network manager, and navigate to VPN connections. When you add a VPN connection, select “Cisco AnyConnect” or equivalent.

3. Set VPN properties

Configure the VPN with the following settings:

  • VPN Protocol: Cisco AnyConnect or OpenConnect
  • Gateway: vpn.iastate.edu
  • User Agent: AnyConnect Linux_64 4.7.00136

4. Connect

Activating the ISU VPN should bring up the following dialog. Under “GROUP” select “Secondary”.

This should bring up the OKTA login dialog in-window:

Enter your credentials and 2FA information if necessary, then click connect. You should see the Cisco Secure Client indicating that you have successfully authenticated.
